SOPHYGRAY Presentation in Berlin

by Carl Kruse

The Ivy Circle joins the Columbia University Club of Berlin to invite all as Columbia alumna Nadja Marcin presents her new exhibition, “SOPHYGRAY – A Feminist Voice Bot,” at Alpha Nova & Galerie Futura, Am Flutgraben 3, Kreuzberg in Berlin.

The event takes place Saturday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m.

Developed over three years with 40 collaborators, the voice bot SOPHIEGRAY engages in surprising, philosophical, and humorous conversations on identity, art, and feminism. SOPHIEGRAY was developed within the framework of a European Media Art Platform residency at the Onassis Stegi Foundation, co-financed by the European Union and was awarded the European Union Prize for Citizen Science in 2023.

Space is reserved for 20 participants. To reserve, please email [email protected].

Nadja Marcin is a Berlin and New York-based artist and filmmaker, exploring gender, history, morality, psychology and human behavior through an intersection of feminism and emotional architecture in theatrical and cinematic contexts.

Best known for her performances “OPHELIA” and “How to Undress in Front of Your Husband”, she subverts historical and media representations of women to highlight ideological systems of power and psychological effects at the moment of their creation. Addressing ecological and human rights concerns through an often absurdist, surreal, bold repurposing of imagery to create thought-provoking encounters.

She has presented solo shows and performances in Kunstverein Ruhr (2021/22), Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken (2020), SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen (2019), Minnesota Street Project (2018), CONTEXT Art Miami (2017), SOHO20 Gallery (2016); Esther Donatz Gallery, Munich (2015); GOETHE Center, Santa Cruz (2014), and Dortmunder Kunstverein (2012). She has participated in group exhibitions and presentations in institutions such as TICKTACK, Antwerp (2022), Transpalette, Bourges (2021), Gropius Bau, Berlin (2020), Ecofutures, London (2019), Fridman Gallery, New York (2018), Microscope Gallery, New York (2017), 5th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art (2016), Middle Gate Geel’13 (2013), ZKM- Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe (2012), and Garage Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow (2010).Marcin has won numerous grants and prizes, including: Artsformation Commission (2022), NEUSTART Modul C by BBK via the Federal Germa Culture Commissioner (2021/2022), Individual Artist’s Grant in Electronic Media & Film by New York Council on the Arts (2022/2019), Kulturamt Köln (2018), Franklin Furnace Grant, New York (2017), NRW Film-und Mediafoundation (2013), DAAD, Germany (2011), and Fulbright, New York (2007).

Hoping 2024 is starting beautifully for you and see you on February 3!

Cheers,

Gallery Walk June 2-3 in Charlottenburg

by Carl Kruse

The Ivy Circle invites everyone to the gallery walks slated for the 2nd and 3rd of June in the Charlottenburg kiez of Berlin.

Called the Charlotten Walk, the 2 days will see 41 galleries open their doors to all.   Hours for Friday, June 2, are 6- 9 in the evening, and on Saturday, 3 June, from noon to six pm.

Charlottenburg in Berlin is home to one of the most energetic and exciting gallery scenes in Germany, making for a perfect location for artistic exhibitions. Participating galleries include 68Projekts, Gedok Berlin, Galerie Albrecht, Galerie Bassenge, Galerie Michael Janssen, Kienzle Foundation, and Galerie Anna Probst.

Over time, a large number of galleries have relocated to the kiez from other parts of Berlin, such as from the Potsdamer Strasse, and from other cities such as Hamburg and Munich.

The Charlotten Walk gallery tour was created in 2018 by Artbutler, with Sussanne Burmehl taking over in 2022.

For further info: www.charlottenwalk.de

While the Ivy Circle does not have a specific tour planned for the Charlotten Walk it encourages everyone to explore on their own the various offerings in modern art open to all and at no cost.

Cocktails at Hier Wo Du Strahlst in Berlin

by Carl Kruse

It’s time for cocktails and our next gathering takes place on Wednesday, May 24 starting at 7:00 pm at the bar “Hier Wo Du Strahlst” (Here Where you Shine) on Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 20, 10176 Berlin.

Hier Wo Du Strahlst is a new bar owned by writer and art publisher Johannes Finke. The Ivy Circle has the place for itself this night.

Johannes welcomes everyone with a complimentary shot (or two) of Fräulein Schoz-Ingwer, a newly launched (and delicious) ginger liquor made in Berlin, as well as a specially priced drink list just for us. Almost anything else you might fancy is a la carte with a good chance of drinks aplenty flying about gratis.

Drink with us and say hello to friends new and old. Good conversations guaranteed.

Please RSVP to [email protected] so we can give Johannes an accurate head count.

Cheers!
Carl Kruse

Our last event with Uwe Westphal was a tremendous success and we thank everyone who came and lent their support.

Ivy Circle Berlin – Tour of Tempelhof Airport

by Carl Kruse

Join us for an evening of Berlin history as the Ivy Circle teams up with Wharton School Alumni of Berlin and with the Carl Kruse Arts Blog for a private tour of the former Tempelhof Airport on Friday, 24 February 2023 starting at 6:30pm.

Tempelhof Airport is one of the largest architectural monuments in Europe, and one of only three main buildings in Berlin built by the Nazis that have survived (the other two being the Olympic Stadium and the former Luftwaffe headquarters, currently home to the Finanzamt).

Built between 1936 and 1941, the building stands for the self-staging of the National Socialists. In 1948/49, however, the airport also became a symbol of freedom through the Berlin Airlift.

Let’s learn more about the ideological-political background of the airport and explore some of its most interesting spaces.

Guided Private Tour: 2 hours, 18:30 – 20:30h.

After the tour we will head to Orville’s, the former US Air Force Officer’s Lounge off the main hall for drinks and chat. At 9:00 p.m., their house jazz band with a guest vocalist will celebrate a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

The program fee includes starter wines, waters and nibbles.

RSVP kindly asap to Georgette via [email protected]

Program fee for the evening is 30 € payable in advance.

Bank details will be provided upon registration.

First come, first served. Maximum 30 guests!

Important notes:
Due to the structural conditions, the tours are unfortunately not barrier-free. A good basic physical condition is required due to longer distances and various stairs. Sturdy, closed shoes are required.
Animals, baby carriages, walkers and wheelchairs are not allowed.
Photography is allowed only for private use.
In case of late arrival at the starting point, participation in the guided tour cannot be guaranteed.
Please meet at 18:15h at the CHECK-IN Visitor Center on Platz der Luftbrücke, right next to the main central entrance to the airport building.
